What is a generic medication?

Generic medications are significantly discounted copies of brand name medication that have the same active ingredients, intended use, dosage, side effects, effects, and route of administration as the original brand name medication. In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.

What is Spiriva?

Spiriva is a medicine prescribed to people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This umbrella term includes several serious lung conditions such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and non-reversible asthma. Patients use Spiriva daily to alleviate breathing problems.

How It Works

The active substance in Spiriva, tiotropium bromide, relaxes muscles in the airwaves, thus increasing airflow to the lungs. Patients inhale the drug through a specially-formulated device. The medication needs to be administered once daily as part of an ongoing maintenance regime.

Spiriva should not be used to treat onset or acute breathing problems. Patients who experience sudden attacks of breathlessness must be prescribed separate medications to deal with this problem.

Spiriva Has Two Easy-to-Use Applications

Spiriva Respimat

This is a propellant-free hand-held inhaler. The medicine is stored as a solution in the cartridge of the device. Because of its special design, this inhaler discharges the medicinal mist slowly. Additionally, it is able to create an aerosol with very fine particles.

This translates into higher lung deposition and an ability to achieve high efficiency at a lower dose of medication. The inhaler is also easy to store and carry and features a dose-release button that measures the amount of medicine discharged so one dose is equal to two puffs.

Spiriva Handihaler

With the Handihaler, medicine is delivered in the form of a dry powder in capsule form. Each capsule contains a single dose of the medicine. To administer the medication, patients must breathe in twice for a full dose. Note that capsules should never be swallowed, and are for oral inhalation use only.

This is a prescription medication and should only be used after consulting a physician. Prior to starting Spiriva, the possibility of allergic reactions and negative side effects need to be discussed with a doctor.

The information above is a quick summary of facts about Spiriva, provided by third parties. Patients should always refer to a physician for medical advice on how to administer this drug, along with any other specific questions they may have.

Generic Alternatives to Spiriva

Patients can buy generic alternatives to Spiriva via our international online pharmacy. Before deciding to switch to an alternative containing tiotropium bromide, patients need to consider the fact that Spiriva is administered via two patented devices which, the manufacturer claims, allow for the active substance reaching a patient’s lungs in a more effective manner, compared to other standard systems.

As with the brand-name drug, patients should avoid taking its generic alternatives if they are allergic to milk proteins. This medicine can interact with a number of others, including antihistamines and atropine, as well as some medications for irritable bowel syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, ulcers and urinary tract issues.

The most common side effects of taking this drug include dry mouth, constipation, stomach pain, vomiting, and indigestion.
