Spiriva Respimat Helps Treat the Following Conditions:

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that is accompanied by symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Some patients only experience mild symptoms while others require continuous monitoring and medical treatment. Asthma is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

The condition has no cure, but symptoms can be managed so that patients can continue to lead active and productive lives.

COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the chronic inflammation of the lungs. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and frequent respiratory infections. COPD is mainly caused by smoking, through exposure to polluted air can also be a cause. The condition is not curable, but a number of medications can slow its progression and reduce negative symptoms.

Spiriva Respimat Active Ingredient

Spiriva Respimat contains the active ingredient tiotropium bromide, which belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics. Spiriva Respimat relaxes the muscles around the airways, opening them up, and allowing patients to breathe more easily.

General Drug Information

What Is Spiriva Respimat and What Is It Used For

Spiriva Respimat is prescribed to patients with lung diseases such as asthma and COPD. If used regularly, this medication helps to prevent negative symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath. Controlling breathing problems increases a patient’s quality of life.

Spiriva Respimat must be used regularly in order to be effective. It does not have immediate action and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems. Patients should use their quick-relief inhaler (e.g. Ventolin) in the event of a sudden attack of wheezing or sudden shortness of breath.

Usage and Application

Before buying Spiriva Respimat online, read the medication guide provided by your doctor or pharmacist.

It is important to read the patient instruction sheet for directions on the proper use of Spiriva Respimat. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

Follow the instructions for test sprays when using the inhaler for the first time, or if you haven’t used it for more than three days. Slow-moving mist shows that the inhaler is working properly. Clean the mouthpiece of the inhaler at least once a week, as directed.

When using the inhaler, patients should put their lips tightly around the mouthpiece. Rinse your mouth after using Spiriva Respimat to prevent dry mouth and throat irritation.

When testing the device, always spray away from the face to avoid getting the medication into the eyes. Patients may experience eye pain, irritation, temporary blurred vision, and other vision changes if this occurs.

Patients are usually directed to inhale Spiriva Respimat by mouth, twice per day. Patients should not inhale more than two sprays in a 24-hour period.

Patients using other inhalers should wait at least one minute between each medication.

Spiriva Respimat should be used regularly to gain the most benefit from it. To help patients remember, the medication should be used at the same time each day.

Patients should not increase their dose or use Spiriva Respimat more often/ for longer than prescribed. Their condition will not improve any faster, and the risk of side effects increases.

Patients using Spiriva Respimat to manage asthma symptoms may need to wait four to eight weeks before they experience the full benefit of this medication. Patients should learn which of their inhalers should be used every day and which provides quick relief (to be used only when breathing worsens suddenly).

Ask your treating physician about the recommended course of action in the event of new or worsening symptoms (e.g. cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, increased sputum, and waking at night with breathing troubles).

Patients should also ask what to do in the event they are having to use their quick-relief inhaler more often, or in the event their quick-relief inhaler does not seem to be working well. Learn when you can treat sudden breathing problems by yourself and when you must get immediate medical attention. Alert your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Considerations Before Taking Spiriva Respimat

Patients must inform their doctor if they are allergic to tiotropium bromide (the main ingredient in Spiriva Respimat) or to similar medications like ipratropium or atropine. Spiriva Respimat may contain inactive ingredients which can cause allergy.

It is important to discuss your medical history, especially kidney disease, difficulty urinating, and – in men – enlarged prostate. Any personal or family history of angle-closure type glaucoma should also be mentioned.

Spiriva Respimat may cause dizziness or blurred vision. Alcohol and marijuana have a similar effect. Patients should not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until they can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages and discuss marijuana use with your doctor.

Before surgery or dental procedures, patients should tell their doctor or dentist about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products they are using.

Older men who use Spiriva Respimat face an increased risk of problems with urination.

During pregnancy, Spiriva Respimat should be used only when clearly needed. Women should discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor.

It is not known whether Spiriva Respimat passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Delayed and Omitted Doses

Patients who miss a dose of Spiriva Respimat should take it as soon as they remember. If it is already time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and proceed as usual. Patients should not double their dose to catch up.

Other Medications and Spiriva Respimat

Drug interactions may change the way Spiriva Respimat works, thus increasing the risk of side effects. Before starting treatment, patients need to inform their doctor about all medications and supplements they are taking. Patients should not change their dose or stop taking this medication unless their physician specifically advises them to do so.

Some medications may interact negatively with Spiriva Respimat. Examples include other anticholinergics like Atrovent HFA and Isopto Atropine.

Adverse Reactions

Most patients are able to use Spiriva Respimat safely without serious side effects.

Common side effects include dry mouth and dizziness. Should any of these effects persist or worsens, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Serious side effects include difficulty urinating and painful urination.

In rare cases, some Spiriva Respimat patients may experience a severe sudden worsening of breathing problems immediately after use. Should this happen, patients need to use their quick-relief inhaler and seek immediate medical help.

Patients should also seek immediate medical help in the event of any eye pain, swelling, and/or redness. Other very serious side effects include vision changes like seeing rainbows around lights at night and blurred vision.

Serious allergic reactions to Spiriva Respimat are rare, yet patients should be aware of symptoms including rash, itching, and swelling (tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Contact your doctor or pharmacist should you experience any side effects not listed above.

How to Store Spiriva Respimat

Spiriva Respimat should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Do not store in the bathroom.

The inhaler will lock when all of the medication has been used up. Discard any inhaler that is locked or into which a cartridge has been placed three or more months previously.

Unwanted medication should be disposed of properly and should not be poured into drains or flushed down the toilet. Patients should consult a pharmacist or their local waste disposal company to find out more about safe disposal methods.
