In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.

Epiduo Gel Helps Treat the Following Conditions:

Acne

Acne is caused by dead skin cells and oil blocking the pores of the skin. This can produce a number of blemishes on the skin including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, cysts, and nodules. Acne is most typical in teenagers but can persist in adults, too. Treatments for acne are available and are recommended to prevent permanent scarring of the skin.

Epiduo Gel Active Ingredients

Epiduo Gel is a combination medication for acne. It contains the active ingredient adapalene, a vitamin A derivative which decreases swelling and inflammation.

The second active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, which kills acne-causing bacteria and promotes the drying and peeling of skin, helping it recover faster.

Generic Epiduo Gel Alternative

Generic alternatives to Epiduo are not yet available on this website.

General Drug Information

What is Epiduo Gel and What Is It Used For?

Epiduo Gel is a combination medication which helps to decrease the severity of acne, reduce the number of pimples, and promote quick healing.

Usage and Application

Epiduo Gel should be applied as prescribed by a doctor. Most patients are directed to apply the cream to the skin once daily. The dosage and treatment plan depends on a patient’s medical condition and response to treatment. In children, the dosage is also based on size and age.

Before applying the medication, you should wash their hands and clean affected skin with a mild cleanser. Pat skin dry and apply a pea-sized amount Epiduo Gel using your fingertips. Do not use a larger amount (or apply more frequently) than recommended. Affected skin will not improve any faster, and overuse can increase risk of redness, peeling, and pain.

During the first few weeks of using Epiduo Gel, your acne may worsen as medication affects pimples inside the skin, thus bringing them to the skin surface.

Use Epiduo Gel regularly to get the most benefit from it. To prevent forgetting, it is best to use the medication at the same time each day.

The medication should be applied to the skin only. Do not apply to the inner lip area, inside the nose/mouth, or on mucous membranes. Do not apply to cut, scraped, sunburned, or eczema-affected skin.

Wash your hands after using the medication to avoid accidentally getting it in your eyes. Should you Epiduo Gel get into your eyes, flush with large amounts of water.

Patients should inform their doctor if their condition persists or worsens.

Considerations Before Taking Epiduo Gel

Before starting treatment, patients need to discuss the possibility of allergic reactions to benzoyl peroxide or to any vitamin A derivatives.

It is important to discuss the patient’s medical history, especially relating to other skin conditions like eczema.

Use caution when applying near the hairline, as Epiduo Gel may bleach hair. Epiduo gel can also bleach fabric, so avoid contact between the medication (or treated skin) and colored clothing, bedding, and towels.

Some patients may become more sensitive to the sun. Limit sun exposure and wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outside. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and report any sunburn to your doctor.

If you become sunburned, wait until your skin has recovered completely before using Epiduo Gel again. Weather extremes such as wind or cold are known to cause irritation.

Patients should avoid certain cosmetic procedures on any treated skin areas. Avoid procedures like electrolysis, waxing, and epilation on the treated areas.

In pregnant patients, Epiduo Gel should only be used when clearly needed. Women should discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor.

It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk. Nursing mothers should consult their doctor before breastfeeding.

Delayed and Omitted Doses

Patients who miss their dose of Epiduo Gel should take it as soon as they remember. If this happens near the time for the next dose, patients should skip the missed dose and proceed as usual. Patients should not double up on the dose to catch up.

Other Medications and Epiduo Gel

Drug interactions may change the way Epiduo Gel works, increasing the risk of side effects. Before starting treatment, patients need to discuss the full list of medications and supplements they are taking with their doctor. Patients should not change their dose or stop taking this medication unless their physician advises them to do so.

Skin treatments like Atralin Gel and Aczone can interact negatively with Epiduo Gel. This is also the case with medications which increase sensitivity to sunlight.

Examples include tetracycline antibiotics, sulfa antibiotics (such as sulfamethoxazole), and quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin. Thiazide water pills (like hydrochlorothiazide) may also interact negatively with Epiduo Gel.

Patients should avoid using other skin products that are harsh, irritating, or drying. This includes hair perming solutions, as well as medicated and abrasive cleansers.

Products with alcohol, lime, or menthol can also irritate the treated area, as can soaps and cosmetics with a strong drying effect (containing alpha hydroxy acids or glycolic acid).

Products containing sulfur, resorcinol, and salicylic acid should be avoided. Patients who have used such products recently should wait for their effects on the skin to wear off before starting treatment with Epiduo Gel.

This document does not contain a full list of all possible interactions. Please consult with your physician before buying Epiduo Gel.

Adverse Reactions

Most patients are able to use Epiduo Gel safely without side effects.

Possible side effects, however, include skin redness, drying, peeling, and burning. Some people may experience swelling of the skin or may experience worsened acne. These effects are likely to occur within the first four weeks of treatment and typically subside. Patients are usually directed to apply moisturizer on the treated skin area. Consult your physician if symptoms persist or worsen.

Serious allergic reactions to Epiduo Gel are rare, yet patients should be aware of allergy symptoms such as rash, itching and swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.

How to Store Epiduo Gel

Epiduo Gel should be stored at room temperature. The container should be closed tightly. Do not freeze. Keep away from children and pets.

Unwanted medication should be disposed of properly. Epiduo Gel should never be poured into drains or flushed down the toilet. Patients should consult a pharmacist or their local waste disposal company to find out more about safe disposal methods.
